Interviews, Meet the Artist

Meet The Artist: Dave Arnold

If you have visited The Art Center Gallery and Custom Framing, you have probably met Dave Arnold. Dave, and his lovely wife Jane, own the Art Center and have turned it into a beautiful and exquisite gallery right in the heart of downtown Washington, Missouri. Dave is a graphic artist, and he currently works for the St. Louis Art Museum. However, did you know that he also creates amazing art with watercolors and pencils? Always modest about his work, Dave agreed to do an interview for Re-Discover Washington.

How long have you been involved in art?

Ever since I was a little kid I’ve had an interest in art. When my older sisters had art projects to do for school, they would always give them to me. I guess I have always been good at it. In the beginning, I was experimenting with sculpting – I used to make whole villages out of clay. When I was in High School I began selling some of my artwork. Back then I was fascinated by the Southwest Indians.  Norman Rockwell has always been an inspiration for my work, but throughout the years I developed a signature style of my own.

What is your favorite media and place to create art?

My favorite media is watercolor pencil. I have tried plein air painting, but I find that the outdoors hides too many distractions. I normally paint in my studio, which is currently at The Art Center.

Dave's studio is located in the far right corner in the Art Center. Stop by and see what he is working on.

What inspires you?

My early work was inspired by the Indians and the Southwest. There was a stage in my life when I wanted to be a portrait artist. Currently I am fascinated by architectural details – right now I am working on an architectural commission piece.

What does your art mean to you?

It’s my creative outlet. When I start a painting, I get lost in it. It’s a great way to detach yourself from the mundane, and to enjoy art for art’s sake. It’s almost like a religious experience.
