One of my favorite things to do in winter, is to take evening walks downtown. Hat and gloves are a must, and one of my favorite window shopping stops is the Art Center Gallery and Custom Framing. Who decorates their beautiful windows? Dottie Lownsbury-Dolan, an amazing artist who has spent most of her life in Colorado, and has been living in Washington since 2006.
Meet Dottie. Her favorite color is green and she loves birds and horses. Dottie has more than 30 years experience in the art industry as an artist representative and a gallery director and owner. We are lucky to have her in Washington.
Dottie has been decorating the windows of the Art Center for quite some time. She picks a different theme for every season and every object she selects fits perfectly in place contributing to the overall artistic effect.
Many times Dottie creates unique furniture pieces for the Art Center windows. What started our as a necessity to complete a window design, has turned into a new form of art. Such is the case with this amazing toddler bed, currently on display at the Art Center. How is it made? With lots of beautiful paper and imagination.
Dottie has taken her hobby of “treasure hunting” and turned it into an art form by taking her “finds” of vintage furniture or architecture elements and repurposing them into functional art.
The age old process of decoupage takes on a new twist by how she tears, positions and places recycled papers, imagery, and paint to create one of a kind works of art.
The best part – her whimsical creations are not only fun, but also very functional.
The details in Dottie’s creations are amazing. She loves to put certain things together not in a way people would normally expect. Dottie is naturally drawn to color and design, and the result never disappoints.
She does not like waste, that’s why every single piece of paper gets used. It’s amazing how a simple object can be turned into a beautiful piece of art just with some paper, glue and imagination.
A detail from one of the chairs Dottie has created. She shops local antique stores to find furniture that inspires her and is in need of some love. Some of her treasures come from Calico Cat Antiques or Toni’s Home Decor.
Even something as ordinary as a pumpkin can be transformed into a stylish decoration piece.
Dottie’s craft does not stop with chairs and tables, she also makes beautiful jewelry. Wouldn’t that make a great Christmas gift?
Next time you are walking by the Art Center, go in and take a look at Dottie’s beautiful pieces. Her signature style immediately attracts you with its whimsical and fun design. What I love the most is how everything falls into place: nothing needs to be added or taken away.
