Tarena Jedrey was one of my students in the Photography Class I thought at East Central College Center for Workforce Development. She called me a couple of weeks after the class, and we met to give her some more advice on how to photograph her products. The more we talked about what she does, the more I wanted to interview her for the blog. I am a firm believer in aromatherapy and I wish more people were aware of the beneficial power of essential oils. Tarena has already launched her Etsy shop and she agreed to do an interview for Re-Discover Washington. All photos in this post were taken by her! 🙂
1. What sparked your interest in aromatherapy?
A few years ago I had a horrible sinus headache that I had been fighting for days. I called and scheduled a massage to see if perhaps the massage therapist could get things unblocked and running for me. To my pleasant surprise, the therapist used essentials oils during the massage. Peppermint and Wintergreen to open up my sinuses and Oregano to help fight any infection I might have. When I left, I was able to breathe through my nose for the first time in days, and over the next three days was completely relieved of the sinus issues I had been having. I started researching essential oils on the Internet and I found out there were hundreds of uses for these antiviral, antibacterial, antiseptic and anti inflammatory oils (and that list is just the beginning of their therapeutic properties). I got excited about how I could use them to naturally care for my family, and that’s how it all began.
2. How did you learn to make your own products?
I started buying book after book on how to make homemade herbal bath and body recipes. Most of the recipes included essential oils. Following a recipe is a great way to get started, but I wanted to be able to customize the blends and create my own recipes. This led me to looking for online aromatherapy schools. I found a great school and received my certification in a little over a year.
3. Can essential oils really help?
The short answer is YES. Understanding how and why essential oils work can help you form your own opinion. In a nutshell, essential oils are the natural aromatic liquid of shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. This liquid is made of chemical components that help the plant defend itself against insects and disease and help the plant to grow, live, evolve and adapt to its surroundings. This essential oil can and will do the same for us, providing physical and emotional support. Let’s look at one of my favorite oils for the cold and flu season, Eucalyptus globulus. Its chemical components are made up of Monoterpenes, Sesquiterpenes, Monoterpenols and Oxides. The therapeutic benefits of these chemical components include antifungal, antimicrobial, antiseptic, anti inflammatory, decongestant, and expectorant properties. On an emotional level, Eucalyptus globulus is uplifting, helps clear the mind and aids in concentration. The molecules of essential oils are so tiny, that when rubbed onto the skin or breathed through the nose, they are absorbed and enter the blood stream almost immediately. (Some essential oils are made up of larger molecules and take a little more time to penetrate).
4. What kind of products do you currently offer and what are they beneficial for?
I currently offer four blends that come in 4oz spray bottles. Stress Relief, Sleep Tonic, Love Potion, and a Monster Elixir for the kids. Love Potion was inspired by the upcoming Valentine’s Day. The essential oils used in the blend are great stress reducers, helping you unwind, unclench and relax. Love Potion also contains oils known for their aphrodisiac properties. Monster Elixir was inspired by my children when they were little. What child hasn’t had problems falling asleep with monsters to blame? I used to spray my perfume under their bed and in their closets, because the monsters hated the smell and would leave. When I learned how essential oils always work on an emotional level I created Monster Elixir. The essential oils used in this blend have sedative, relaxing, calming, and anti-anxiety related properties. At bedtime in our house, it’s brush your teeth, put on your jammies, and spray Monster Elixir.
I make custom blends for friends and family all the time, everything from bath salts to face soap. My son is a teenager and he and his friends are at the age where they struggle with acne. I can’t keep the face soap in stock. Everyone loves it! I have also recently been experimenting with aromatherapy jewelry. I love the idea of taking essential oils with me wherever I go.
5. Can everybody use essential oil products, children and adults alike?
Essential oils are great for kids and adults. Children respond to the oils very well, because their systems are less toxic. They are safe and effective for pets as well. I’ve treated several animals with symptoms ranging from anxiety to mastitis to fleas.
6. Share some everyday uses of essential oils everybody can incorporate in their daily life.
Okay, I would be happy to. I’ll pick Lemon oil, one I use every day. It is easy to find and inexpensive. Uses for Lemon essential oil include:
- Add one teaspoon of lemon essential oil to one cup mineral oil for an effective furniture polish.
- For general household cleaning purposes, it works well for removing gum, wood stain, oil, and grease spots.
- Add a few drops to your dishwasher for spot free dishes.
- Diffuse to freshen your home or add a few drops to a spray bottle to deodorize and sterilize the air.
- Add two drops to water for purification or combine with peppermint (Mentha piperita) to provide a refreshing lift.
- Add to food, tea, rice milk or soy milk for flavoring.
- Add a drop or two to baked goods before baking
- Add ten drops to a cotton ball and place inside your vacuum cleaner.
It is very important to know your source of essential oils, especially when taking them internally. Research, research, research, and only buy from sources that use 100% therapeutic grade essential oils. If you would like to know my trusted resources email me, I would be happy to help.
