How long has Cowan’s Mercantile been in business?

Tom’s parents Jerry and Oma Gildehaus opened “Granny’s Attic” 1984. They ran a very successful gift shop until the early 90’s. In 2009, Tom’s sister Marynell decided she was going to open a store and call it Cowan’s Mercantile, in the same location. She left her job in the legal profession to pursue this. Not too long after opening the Mercantile, Marynell got a job offering she could not refuse. Tom and Rachel thought that the Mercantile complimented the restaurant, and decided to keep it open as the Mercantile in 2010.

What makes Cowan’s Mercantile unique?

What do you love about being located in downtown Washington?

Tom and Rachel, owners of Cowan’s Restaurant, are very passionate about Downtown Washington. It is a beautiful and well maintained community, with a lot to offer. Tom grew up in Downtown, and between Borgia grade school and Cowan’s Restaurant, he spent most of his time here.  As many of you know, Tom and Rachel love Downtown Washington so much, they moved above the restaurant. The best thing about having your own business in Downtown, is having customers from near and far, come tell you stories of how their downtown has withered away. It makes us very appreciative of all of the hard work and the people that have put their time into keeping Downtown Washington alive.

Can crafters and artists have their items for sale at the Mercantile?

Cowan’s Mercantile offers a designated section for consigners. We’ve had many different items including, woodworking, photography, Avon cosmetics, handmade crafts, and hand knitted items. We are always rearranging and making room for new consigners.  We would love for more artists and crafters to join us.
