Washington Missouri Optimists: Friends of Youth

I have been hearing about the Optimist Club a lot, but until recently I had no idea what they do. That’s why when a friend of mine said she has joined, I asked her if I could tag along and interview the Optimists for the blog. The fact that they meet for lunch at Old Vine Riverfront Bistro (former American Bounty), definitely weighed in their favor.

Optimist International is an association of more than 2,900 Optimist Clubs around the world dedicated to "Bringing Out the Best in Kids." Each Optimist Club determines the needs of the young people in its community and conducts programs to meet those needs.

At their Wednesday lunch meetings at the Old Vine Bistro, the Washington Missouri Optimists enjoy a delicious lunch and after that get to business. They do a lot of fundraisers, like Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, the Optimist Raffle and many others.

The business meeting is preceded by the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, and the Optimist Creed. Optimists strive to live up to their name and maintain an upbeat attitude, which they try to pass along to the children they serve. The words of The Optimist Creed are well known to Optimist volunteers and beyond. The creed gives volunteers a focus for personal improvement as they work to better the world around them.
