Truth: I spend half of my life on Facebook. Promoting businesses people and events, updating pages, sharing pictures of my food, liking funny cat and children photos and reading inspirational articles. Every once in a while something new and fresh pops up in my Facebook feed, and this time when I clicked on it it took me to Kristi, owner of Hazel Basil &Co. She kindly agreed to do an online interview for Re-Discover Washington.
Tell us a little more about yourself and what you do.
I’m Kristi Meyer, mother of three. My day job is drafting at BFA, Inc. in downtown Washington. I love to do all types of DIY projects and creating art…but the craft that I enjoy doing the most is crocheting. To me, it’s a relaxing way to end a stressful day…and it’s my own artistic outlet. I named my business after my daughter…who’s name is Hazel. I gave her the nickname Hazel Basil when she was a baby and it’s sort of stuck with her.
Who taught you how to crochet?
My mom taught me how to crochet while I was in high school. She is a very talented, patient woman…and spent many hours explaining stitches and how to read patterns. From her “lessons” I started making blankets and afghans for my friends and family for special occasion and holiday gifts…and eventually figured out how to crochet in a circle and became obsessed with crocheted hats. So, I guess this Hazel Basil thing is all thanks to my mother and I being bored one night and deciding to do something crafty. 😉
How did you decide to start Hazel Basil & co.?
When my sister was pregnant with her first baby, I decided I wanted to make her a horde of cute hats so her baby would have fun photo props for their newborn photo session. (I started out making a lot of girlie hats and bonnets…so naturally, she ended up having a boy.) 😉 As I made them, I showed the pictures to friends and family and they suggested I try to sell them. So, I started the Hazel Basil & Co. Facebook page and couldn’t be happier with how my little business has taken off!
Do you do custom orders?
For the most part, my orders have been customized. I encourage my customers to suggest new ideas that cater to their personalities and tastes. I very rarely have a customer that says “I want it exactly like in the picture.” They usually would like a different color or stitch pattern to make it their own pattern…which I love! New designs keep me going…and challenge me to be more creative every day.
What inspires you to create new designs?
I feel like everything inspires me! If I see pretty colors together, a textured material or even a funny picture, my first thought is, “How can I incorporate that into a crocheted hat?” My kids are really my biggest inspirations though. They come up with the craziest colors and pattern ideas…but that’s what they like, and that’s the ideas I want to hear.
Where can people purchase your products?
At the moment, customers can order my products by messaging me on my Facebook page, and also through my website: www.hazelbasilco.com I like to have conversations with my customers to make sure I understand all of their specifications and get their order exactly right!
Now you know who to call for your handcrafted, made-to-order crochet hats, slippers and so much more! You can reach Kristi on Facebook, through her website, or e-mail email@example.com. She will be happy to design something for you!
