It’s no secret that I am a fan of Todd Geisert Farms and what they do. Having grown up in Bulgaria, fresh fruit, veggies and meat were never a foreign concept to me until I came to the Midwest and found that they are a little hard to find here. If you have never tasted a home grown tomato, do yourself a favor and try one this summer, and you will know what I mean. You can have results or excuses, not both, and Todd Geisert is definitely a man with results.
Located on old 100, the farm offers a lot more than fresh pork. In spring, Todd has a variety of vegetable and herb plants ready to go in your garden.
Herbs are very easy to grow and if you don’t have space in your yard you can always plant them in a pot and have them handy when you are cooking.
Growing your own herbs and veggies will not only save you a lot of money, but they will also taste a lot better.
Trust me – I was the kind of girl that hated helping out in the yard when I was little, and instead of planting garlic I would opt our for reading a book under the shade of a tree. However, tasting some of the produce available at the stores here made me quickly want to grow my own.
Luckily, I remember a lot of how it’s done, and it’s quite easy, really. A tip for you: if your pickling cucumbers are tasting bitter – water them more. My grandpa used to have a green house with cucumbers and he’s taught me a lot.
The next best thing to growing your own herbs and veggies is picking them directly at the farm! Yes, Todd offers that!
So next time you are planning a delicious meal and don’t have all the right ingredients, swing by the farm on your way back from work and pick (literally) what you need.
Todd also has lettuce started, which by now is probably ready for picking.
It’s not to late to put in a garden, however small it may be.
And if just veggies and herbs won’t do the trick for you, Todd has lots of meat as well – from pork chops to snack sticks.
Not a fan of pork? How about lamb or turkey?
Todd also carries free range chicken and whole turkey.
The way the animals are raised makes a big difference to how the meat tastes.
Meet Todd and his happy pigs.
Open 365 days a year, Geisert’s self-service roadside stand operates on the honor principle. The prices of the produce and the pork are written neatly on a dry erase board, and there is a calculator and some pieces of paper to help you figure out how much you owe. In a time when everybody locks their front door, it is nice to see that there is some trust left in the human nature.
Next time you are on Old Hwy 100, don’t pass the Geisert sign by! Stop, take a look at the pigs rolling around in the mud, and get yourself some herbs, veggies and meat for a delicious dinner.
