Welcome to Washington Ellie!

I love going to the Downtown Post Office because the staff there is always so nice and the ladies from Downtown Washington Inc. always have somebody interesting for me to meet! Last week I met up with Ellie, the new intern for the summer who happens to be extremely adorable and right-away-likeable. 🙂

Meet Ellie Hight: Downtown Washington Inc.’s newest intern from Southeast Missouri State University! Ellie will be starting her senior year this fall and is getting a BS in Historic Preservation. She will be staying with us in Washington until August 1st.

How did you decide to come to Washington, MO for the summer?

I was looking for an internship that has to do with Main Street Projects, and my professor Dr. Steven Hoffman suggested I call his former student Bridgette Kelch in Washington. I spoke with her on the phone and told her what I was after, and next thing I know I found myself here. I am staying with Bridgette, her husband David and their three cats and I am loving my internship so far.

What is the one thing that you like the most about Washington?

I love how nice and friendly everyone is. People treat me like I’ve been living here forever and they greet me everywhere I go, even people I have never met before. I like the slower pace of life and the fact that everybody knows everybody. When somebody walks in the post office, the girls greet them by name, and I find that wonderful.

Have you noticed the increased activity on Downtown Washington inc.'s Facebook page? Ellie has a lot to do with it!

What are some of the projects you have been working on at Downtown Washington Inc.?

I have been working on a Social Media project – interviewing the different businesses around town and posting photos on Downtown Washington’s Facebook page and Instagram. It has been very interesting for me, because at school we focus on different aspects of historic preservation and it’s great to do a hands-on promotional project. I am learning about it as I go and Bridgette has been teaching me a lot of things.

Danielle and I have been working on a feasibility assessment project for apartments on top of Joe’s Bakery. We have also been on the roof of the Farmers’ Market pavilion, painting the outside of the building.

I like the variety of projects I am involved in and the opportunity to meet and spans time with the Downtown Washington Inc. board. The people in this town are wonderful and I love how everybody works together. They all have their day jobs and after that they come and volunteer their time and efforts for community projects. That’s devotion.

What else do you like about Washington so far?

I’ve become quite fond of Cowan’s food. I love the downtown area and all the small shops. I am also fascinated by the amazing architectural features of the historic buildings downtown.

Everybody has been so welcoming and friendly, that when my parents came to visit last weekend they couldn’t believe I’ve only been here for two weeks. Wherever we went people knew me by name and were like “Hi, Ellie!”

It’s a wonderful town and an amazing community and I am happy to be here!

When you see Ellie in town, make sure you say "Hi!" We are happy to have her as well, I've been enjoying her fresh social media approach and her happy personality! (photo: Downtown Washington Inc.)
