What happens when a mother and daughter love crafts, team up and have a house available? Make and Take Craft Weekend, brought to you in Washington, MO by Tia and Debbie. I have known them both for a while, and when they set up the Craft House I was very excited to go and visit. Shame on me for not making it there yet, but Tia kindly agreed to do an online interview with me and let me use photos from their website/Facebook page. Enjoy the story below and sign up for the next Make and Take Craft Weekend to experience it for yourself!
What exactly is Make and Take Craft Weekend?
Make and Take Craft Weekend is a weekend getaway/retreat for up to 9 people: the weekend begins on Friday evening with a home cooked dinner and ends Sunday with an amazing breakfast. The weekend getaway/retreat is just a great time to take a little time out for yourself and maybe try some things you might not try otherwise. We provide all the materials and supplies to do anywhere from 5-7 different craft projects and we are there to help you in any way. The craft projects range from sewing, to painting, to papercrafting, to jewelry making, etc and they are different for every weekend we hold. I think part of the fun is coming and finding out what kind of projects you will be doing, we promise they will all be fun, exciting, and doable! The weekend includes your lodging for 2 nights, all meals from Friday evening to Sunday morning, along with snacks, drinks, and homemade desserts. It’s a perfect time to catch up with old friends and make some new ones all while letting someone else do all the cooking and cleaning for a whole weekend!
How did you get the idea for it?
We went to a weekend similar to this and just thought it was a great time. We are both such big crafters and like to dabble in a little bit of everything under the sun. We also love to share that knowledge with others and think we have such an amazing town that we would love to share that with everyone. We came back from our weekend and thought we could do this. We fixed up the Craft House so that it can now sleep 9 people and we have a huge craft room where everyone can craft, laugh, and share with others.
What kind of classes do you teach?
I teach a Beginner’s Sewing Class that meets 4 times for a month. We discuss the basics of sewing, machines, patterns, and fabrics and then I lead them in 3 different projects. I think sewing can be overwhelming at first but once you make and finish a project, it can build up your confidence. You then want to continue to learn and try new things.
We are offering Pillow Palooza once a month, in this class we provide everything to make 3 different pillow covers, except the pillow forms. You can choose from our large supply of fabrics and trims to create 3 one of a kind pillows.
Another class we have going now is How to Sew a T-shirt dress, in this class they bring a new or used T-shirt in the size dress they want to make and 2 coordinating fabrics and we help them come up with an adorable T-shirt dress for their little one. These are great when using a holiday T-shirt and some holiday fabrics.
We also try to hold a monthly Craft Night, which is held the 2nd Thursday of the month from 7-10 pm, It’s just a night for people to bring whatever craft they are working on and have a few hours of craft time.
Is it only weekend getaways or do you also offer shorter classes?
Along with the pillow, sewing, and T-shirt dress classes, we do offer a Rag T-shirt Quilt Night. This is from Friday evening until Saturday evening, where we help you create a one of a kind T-shirt Quilt using your old T-shirts. We provide everything needed for the quilts, except the T-shirts, along with one night of lodging and 3 meals, plus snacks and drinks.
Is prior experience necessary to take one of your classes?
Prior knowledge is not necessary for most of our classes, if it is it will always be listed in the details of the class. The best part of these getaway weekends is you don’t have to be crafty to enjoy making the crafts. We are there to help you find that craftiness and to assist you in any way we can. One weekend we had 2 ladies who had never been crafty, by the end of the weekend the one was hemming a pair of pants on the sewing machine and asked for one for Christmas!
Do you offer gift certificates (Christmas is coming)?
Yes they can be purchased on our website!
Can people suggest a class?
Always, we are always up to adding classes and we really want to offer what people want to do. We are also open to creating your own weekend getaway where we can work on a date that works for everyone. I think these would be great for wedding parties where the ladies can take a weekend off, relax, do a little crafting for themselves and also work on wedding items whether that’s decorations or wedding favors. Baby shower weekends would be great too, we could do some things that would be great for the baby, the room and even for the Mom to be. We have a great set up for a scrapbooking weekend or night.
Anything else you’d like to add.
People hear the word Craft Weekend, but know this is so much more than that. It’s a weekend to take some time out for yourself and reconnect with yourself, old friends, and new friends. It’s time taken to unwind so that when Monday morning comes around you are a better version of yourself, whether that’s as a mom, wife, employee, etc. Yes we do crafts but you don’t have to be crafty, it’s amazing all the different results when we show everyone a project and give them the same supplies, everyone makes it their own and are so proud of their projects. The weekends we have had and the classes I have taught, I have been touched by all of these women in some way and I’m always so sad when it has to end. Most of these ladies I have stayed in touch with and I’m so glad I was able to spend time with them because they have influenced my life in one way or another. It’s not just a craft weekend it’s an experience.
